Staying competitive is critical to business success, but with the constantly changing state of today’s market, it can be difficult for established businesses to maintain their competitive edge. Companies are being forced to become more innovative, which can be difficult for those who are focused on maintaining rather than disrupting.

Many people tend to look at things incrementally, building on processes that already exist rather than reimagining them altogether. Because of this, larger, more established companies tend to have a difficult time fostering growth and innovation within their organization.

Startups, on the other hand, are fueled by that innovative mindset that many large organizations are lacking. They aren’t afraid to take risks or to push the boundaries of the status quo, putting them at the forefront of disruptive innovation. …

Last month, Apple revealed a number of highly anticipated products and software updates at this year’s World Wide Developers Conference (WWDC). The 2020 event was unique in that it was streamed exclusively online with no in-person event due to continuing restrictions related to the pandemic. Regardless, the streamed event was very successful and included some exciting announcements. Here are the highlights:

iOS 14 Prioritizes Ease of Use & Personalization

Apple gave a first look at iOS 14, the new update coming to iPhones later this year. Ease of use and personalization are the primary focuses of the update with the introduction of the new App Library. Within this view, apps will be automatically organized into folders based on your most used applications, making it easier to find exactly what you are looking for. Perhaps the most notable update to the home screen, however, are the redesigned widgets that provide highly customizable, data-rich information at a glance.

Over the past few months, the coronavirus pandemic has brought to light the need for businesses to be up to date with technology. As people from all over the world have been forced to work from home, having the necessary systems in place has become vital to success. The Coronavirus has increasingly changed the way people all over the world live, work, and play. Over the past couple of months, people have been practicing social distancing and self-isolation, and it has had a major impact on the ways we shop, collaborate, and socialize. Below are some observations I’ve made in regard to our “new normal” lifestyles, some of which I believe will have everlasting effects.

Having Multiple Revenue Streams Has Become a “Must-Have”

Unfortunately, we’ve already started to see businesses struggling to stay afloat as workers and consumers are staying at home. The pandemic has been a huge disruptor for businesses, and those with a very…

I think that in order for something to be innovative, it must be transformational. It must also create value by solving a meaningful problem in a unique way. The way I see it, there are two different paths to innovation: The first is automation, which is when technology is used to convert an analog process to a digital one. Then there’s the second, more exciting level of innovation, which is disruption. Below, I will break down both paths to innovation and explain how they are essential to business success.

Typically, the first path to innovation is through automation.

The first form of innovative thinking is automation. This is when…

A big issue being discussed in the business world right now revolves around Millennials: How do we attract them and when we do, how do we retain them? More often than not, I see business owners struggling to retain this younger generation, claiming that they are hard to manage and unmotivated in the work environment. There is a common misconception that Millennials are lazy, impulsive, and entitled, but in my experience, this poor performance is a reflection of poor management. …

2019 was the year of “Pro” products for Apple. They released upgraded models of existing Pro products such as the Macbook Pro and the iPad Pro and also announced brand new products like Airpods Pro and the iPhone 11 Pro. Each of these products is meant to be a step or two above what the average consumer needs, and instead cater to pro users such as graphic designers, photographers, app developers, etc. However, possibly the “most Pro” product of them all was released just last month — the Mac Pro.

The release of the 2019 Mac Pro marks the computer’s…

But if I wanted to grow and build a successful company, I knew I had to get this part of the job right.

For many entrepreneurs, the most difficult aspect of starting and growing a business is finding customers. This can be exponentially challenging when the only way you plan to fund your business is through revenue. Back in 2002, I founded Haneke Design by leveraging the experiences I had working with companies of all sizes and industries to help improve their customers’ and prospects’ end-user experiences (You can read more about my history here.) …

I am convinced that writing code is a modern-day digital trade. In order to be a successful coder, one does not need to attend college.

I’m not saying that college is a bad idea. However, my advice to any aspiring coders is that if you do decide to go to college, don’t go the computer science route. More often than not, students who come out of a 4-year CS program can’t actually code using any modern and useful programming languages unless they extended their studies beyond the classroom. …
